Pistol Range OPEN

THE PISTOL RANGE IS OPEN!

Update 7/15: The pistol range is now open!
Update 7/8: All outdoor archery ranges are now open! Pistol building is open, but the pistol range remains closed until some more repairs can be completed.

Original Post:

Attention SCC Members:

The pistol range building is closed until further notice!

Several trees fell on the building during the storms on Saturday night. There are tree branches coming through the roof in the pistol range and the power lines to the building are on the ground. Please avoid the area!
Broadhead Archery League is cancelled this week due to the large number of trees that are down on the woods course.
The outdoor archery and crossbow ranges are closed.
There will be a cleanup work party for the woods course soon, watch for more details!

We are asking that all members avoid the area. Please do not start cleaning up until our insurance company can assess the damage, and we can make sure the area is safe.

We will definitely be asking for volunteer help with the cleanup, but please be patient!

The range will be closed while the contractors are working. We’ll let you know if we know more, but we appreciate your flexibility.

We Need Beer!

Our old beverage distributor has ceased operations, and we are having trouble finding a new distributor that understands private clubs (we’re not complicated…).

If you are, or know, someone that can restock the coolers on a consistent basis please reach out to the Board of Directors at sccbod@stoughtoncc.com. THANK YOU.

Hunter Ed: August 24

The next Hunter Education Internet Field Day will be held on August 24, 2024. The indoor archery range, trap/skeet fields, rifle range, and main clubhouse will be in use. Hunter Education is important as it helps the club maintain its nonprofit status.

Instructors are always needed. It’s fun and rewarding to become a DNR instructor. Interested? Please contact Merlin at 608-206-1832 or merlinkotajarvi@gmail.com.

Updates to Club Handbook

A reminder that annual elections are held in September. Are YOU ready to be a larger part of how the Club operates?

Congratulations Archers!

Congratulations to the S3DA archers, two of whom took first and second places in their categories at the State competition. At this rate we may need a bigger clubhouse for all their trophies!

Updated Club Rules & Procedures Handbook

The SCC Board of Directors has ratified the updated Rules & Procedures Handbook. A big thank you to all who participated in the updates. over the last five months.

The final revision, effective immediately, can be found in PDF format at:

https://stoughtoncc.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Stoughton-Conservation-Club-Rules-and-Procedures-Handbook-20240528.pdf

and is also linked from the main page of the Club web site.

There were many updates to the Handbook to remove duplication and simplify the rules across all the ranges. The biggest changes are:

  • Simplification of the range rules, including:
    • TAB-K is the fundamental set of rules for the club.
    • Shooting outside of posted hours is universally intolerable.
    • No firearms loaded or handled, at all, while people are downrange.
    • Clean up after yourself, and so on.
  • A guest is now defined as an individual and members of that individual’s family, similar to how we define a member.
  • There is no longer a limit on how many times someone can be a guest.
  • The guest fee is waived for active-duty military family members stationed out of state.
  • The Club no longer rents facilities.
  • Holsters are no longer prohibited.
  • Drawing from holsters IS prohibited. If you wish to shoot a holstered firearm remove it at your vehicle.
  • Rules about transport of firearms have been unified across all activities. It is no longer required that a firearm be cased, but it must be unloaded with the action open while being moved, and always follow TAB-K.
  • Trap range is lead shot only.
  • Pistol range is limited to ammunition that does not produce more than 6000 ft-lb.f per square inch of impact energy at the backstop. In short, what is permitted is BB, .177 pellet, and .22 LR, 38 Special, 380 Auto, 9 MM, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP. All other ammunition is not necessarily permitted unless authorized by the Board. This includes all magnum rounds, including .22 Magnum. There are provisions for authorizing hand loads that are “down-loaded.” See the Handbook appendix for computing this.
  • Pistol Range limited rapid fire is permitted, five shots in ten seconds, to match the Pistol League competition. This is only for the Pistol Range. Other ranges must stick to the 2 second rule. Especially archers! (ha ha)
  • Clarification of member expectations to include safe, civil, respectful, and courteous conduct, free of harassment, discrimination, or abusive behavior.

Safety is paramount at SCC, and these rules help ensure that, as well as proper operation of the club and protection of the facilities so all can enjoy them. If you have questions contact the Board of Directors at sccbod@stoughtoncc.com.

We are all empowered to remind each other to be safe, especially if you see unsafe or unwise behavior.

Signs, orientation materials, and the web site are being updated throughout the summer to reflect rule changes. If in doubt, follow the Handbook. Thank you!

——————

As many of you know, the SCC Rules and Procedures Handbook has been undergoing a revision. We have gone through two comment periods, and the Board of Directors has reviewed, discussed, and decided on the requests for rule changes. The Final Draft is now available for review, along with the disposition of the major requests we’ve received:

SCC Rules Procedures Handbook – Final Draft – 2024-05-13

SCC Rules Procedures Handbook – Final Draft – Disposition of Handbook Revision Requests

Moving forward, this Handbook draft will be ratified at the Board of Directors meeting on May 27, 2024, pending final review. These are NOT the Club rules yet.

Feedback, comments, and other concerns can be addressed to bob@plankers.com, and will be brought before the Board of Directors as appropriate.

Summer Activities and Maintenance

Maintenance

With nice weather comes maintenance projects and summer leagues at SCC. As always, maintenance takes priority over any other activities at the club. Almost everyone you see doing work at SCC is a volunteer. If someone is working on a range that you’d like to use, consider lending a hand if you can, or talk with them about when they’ll be done with the work they’re doing. Without our volunteers, club activities would grind to a halt! Thank them for the work they do!

We do sometimes hire professional contractors to work on our facilities as well. If contractors are working on something, give them the space the need to get their jobs done.

Planned Maintenance

Here’s a few things we know will be happening:

  • Archery Woods Course Clean-up Day – Saturday, May 25th at 8:00 AM
    • Meet at the pistol building.
    • Bring yard work tools, rakes, shovels, loppers, chainsaws, etc.
  • Lights will be installed in the rifle range.
    • This will take place sometime in June, likely on a Friday.
    • We probably won’t get a lot of advance notice, but the range will be closed while the contractors are working.

Please Keep The Facilities Clean!

If you, your family members, or your guests make a “mess” please clean it up. Our cleaning service has reported finding some absolutely disgusting messes in the bathrooms. Accidents happen, but if they do please clean them up!

This also goes for the kitchen area. If you make a pizza or something in the kitchen, please clean up after yourself. Wash the utensils, throw away trash, etc.

If we can all work together the club will be much cleaner for everyone!

Summer Activities

There are a few leagues and lots of other things happening at SCC over the summer. Check the website, calendar, and our Facebook page for more details about each activity. Here are a few things that are happening:

      • Doubles Trap (16-yard)
    • Watch for more information!
