Stoughton Conservation Club hosts four Sporting Clays events per year. Our Sporting Clays events our held on the third Saturday of the Month in May through August. Each Sporting Clays course will have 50 targets.
What is Sporting Clays?
Sporting Clays is a clay shooting discipline originally designed to mimic real life hunting scenarios. Think of it like golf, with a shotgun. There will be different stations like holes in golf and each one is different. Sporting Clays as a sport has continued to evolve and now sometimes courses are set up with some very fun and unique challenges that you probably wouldn’t see while hunting.

SCC Lewis Class Rules
We use a modified Lewis Class system to award Lewis Class prizes. The cost to play Lewis Class is typically $5. All Lewis Class money will be awarded as prizes.
Prizes can be claimed at a future Sporting Clays event in the season. Any unclaimed prizes will be mailed at the end of the season, usually in September.
All Lewis Class entries must have a full name, phone number, and address filled out! Any entries without contact info will be kept until the end of the season. We will make our best effort to get you your prizes. However, if we can’t find contact info for you by September, unclaimed prizes will be donated to our youth team, the Viking Lead Slingers.
All score sheets must be turned in to the score keeper. Any score sheets that are not returned will be entered as N/A and will not be eligible for prizes.
All score keeper decisions are final!
SCC Modified Lewis Class System
- Separate all Lewis Class scores and rank them from highest to lowest.
- Divide them into groups of 10.
- If the group boundary is in the middle of a score:
- If there are more shooters above the line, move to the class above.
- If there are more shooters below the line, move them to the class below.
- If there are the same number of shooters above and below, move them based on what balances the classes best. For example if there’s 4 and 4 and moving up would leave a class with 3 shooters, then we might move them down. All things being equal, move them up.
- Tie Breakers
- Gauge
- 410
- 28
- 12, 16, or 20. (No advantage.)
- After all scores are final, pick a random station. “Hey Siri, give me a random number from 1 to 9.”
- Forward run at station X.
- Total on station X.
- Reverse run on station X-1.
- Total on station X-1.
- If there’s still a tie keep going on station X+1.
- If there’s still a tie, for example, two 49 scores who missed the same bird, the prize money for 1st and 2nd would be combined and split.
- If any other situation arises, the score keeper will use their best discretion to break a tie or split prize money.
- Gauge
- Prizes (typically)
- 1st: $30
- 2nd: $20
- Last class.
- The last class will usually have less than 10 shooters. The score keeper will come up with a scheme for awarded prizes based on the number of shooters in the class.
